What is a School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SAT)?

A School-based Apprenticeship / Traineeship (SAT) is a mix of academic, vocational education and training and paid employment. It provides students in Years 10, 11 and 12 with valuable employment skills and hands on industry experience.  

What happens if I have an exam on my work day?

You should arrange with your employer to work a different day or go into work either before or after the exam.

If I have assessment due on my work day what should I do?

Hand it in the day before or make alternative arrangements with your teacher.

Can I change my work day?

Provided you discuss this with your employer and you don’t have any exams or assessment on that day, you can change your work day BUT you must also advise the school or Mrs Cox that you are doing so (this works well when there are school excursions etc.)

How old do I have to be to get a School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship?

If there are no age restrictions on the qualification, you must be in Year 10.

When and where will I see my trainer?

Depending on what qualification you’re a doing, you may see your trainer at school, in the workplace or you may attend TAFE.

What should I wear to work?

Ask your employer this at the time of your interview. You might have to wear a uniform or protective clothing depending on where you are working. Remember you are not only representing yourself, but your school and your employer so dress appropriately for your work environment.

How much will I be paid?

Depending on what qualification you are undertaking, you will be paid the rate set down by Fair Work Australia. You are not entitled to holiday pay and sick pay but are paid a loaded rate of pay which includes these.  Fair Work Info Line – 131 394 or www.fairwork.gov.au

Who pays me?

Your employer will pay you just like they would pay any other employee. When you start you will be asked to provide your bank account details and Tax File Number.  Tax File Number applications are available from Mrs Cox is CP10 or Student Services.  This is a free school service.

Who do I contact if I am sick or can’t get to work?

Your employer! If you know you can’t get to work make sure you inform your workplace – in advance where possible.

What traineeships are available?

From time to time traineeships will be advertised via emails to student year levels, the workplace noticeboard or on the door of CP Block.

What apprenticeships are available?

School-based apprenticeships will be advertised via emails to student year levels, the workplace noticeboard or on the door of CP Block.

Can I have a study period?

Yes. This will be negotiated on a case by case basis.

What if I want to quit my apprenticeship or traineeship?

When you sign into an apprenticeship / traineeship you are entering into a legal contract between a number of parties. During the probationary period - 30 days (traineeship) or 90 days (apprenticeship) you can cancel with no reason but after this time you and the employer must have a mutual reason to cancel.

Can I work extra days?

This is something that needs to be negotiated with your employer. Just remember, every day you work counts towards the minimum 50 days in a 12 month period that you are required to work.

What are the minimum number of hours I have to work during my traineeship?

You will need to work approximately 365 hours over a twelve month period.

If I have a part-time job can I convert it to a traineeship?

Yes if your employer is willing to do so and there is a qualification associated with the industry you work in.

What happens if I don’t finish my traineeship before I leave school?

Ideally, you would finish your traineeship before the end of Year 12. If for some reason this is not possible the employer would need to convert you to part-time or full-time employment until it is completed.

Does my apprenticeship keep going at the end of Year 12?

Yes. Your employer will convert your apprenticeship to part-time or full-time at the end of the school year.

What is user choice funding?

The User Choice program provides government funding for training apprentices and trainees, including school-based apprentices and trainees.  See the Information Brochure regarding funding guidelines.
